2019 Preview: Wests Tigers

NRL

Another year, another Tigers coach

2018 saw Ivan Cleary have his first full season with the Wests Tigers, and he produced immediate results. The club became a genuinely tough competitor finishing the season with the sixth best defensive record. It was their second best defensive season ever behind their 2011 campaign. On the flip side though, it was their worst ever season in attack since the Balmain and Western Suburbs clubs merged ahead of the 2000 NRL season.

The back half of their season was a combination of fighting for a rare finals place, mixed with speculation that Cleary was to be poached by Penrith, who had just punted Anthony Griffin. In the end, Penrith got their man for the new season, and the Wests Tigers finished in ninth place.

So, 2019 sees premiership-winning coach Michael Maguire take over the running of the side. He has the track record and credentials to ensure the Wests Tigers become a top side. But does he have the cattle to do it with?

This season is set to be an emotional one for the club too, as they farewell legends Robbie Farah and Benji Marshall - both of whom may well also reach 300 NRL games this season.

Why they'll win it

M. Maguire. The club's defence was very good last year. Maguire will retain that steel, but will also add to the forwards' attack. If he can enhance the Wests Tigers' forward pack, it will see them take that next step up. Given how tight the competition is, that next step up may well be enough to get them to October.

Why they won't

This season will see the on-field run by yet another coach who may well look at the year as another 'in transition'. Josh Reynolds will ultimately be replacing Marshall and Jacob Liddle is set to succeed Farah, meaning both Reynolds and Liddle won't get a full season together in the run on side until 2020.

2019 Draw

Key player

Moses Mbye - The fullback hit the ground running when he transferred to the Tigers midway through 2018. His kick returns will be vital for getting the Tigers attacking sets off to a strong start.

Luke Brooks - Brooks had his best season yet in 2018 and looks set to continue with his strong form again in 2019. He will again be the chief playmaker and organiser in the side, a role he has shown he absolutely loves.

Ryan Matterson - The Tigers new recruit is a very talented ball playing forward, who has also spent time in the halves and at centre. He will be a revelation for the Tigers attack on the edges.

Rookie To Watch

Paul Momirovski - The young centre made his debut last year for the Roosters and is ready to be a regular in the NRL. He is a very strong chance to lock down a centre spot.
